Valparaiso’s Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) earned a victory in her third place singles match on Saturday to highlight day two of the Kellogg-Hinds Tournament held in Macomb, Ill.
Zakiewicz, playing the only singles match of the day for the Crusaders, defeated Anele Novak of Quincy 6-2, 6-1 for her third victory of the fall season.
“Kristin played another terrific match for us today,” head coach Traci Young said. “Her third place finish caps a great weekend of singles for her.”
Doubles play was the featured attraction at the tournament on Saturday. Valpo’s number one doubles team of Jackie O’Reilly (Green Bay, Wis./DePere H.S.) and Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) earned one victory in their three matches. After the duo fell 8-5 to Leslie Ganer and Katie Garrett of Quincy, the team defeated Val Vasquez and Tina Berto 8-2 in their first consolation match. O’Reilly and York were eventually eliminated from the tournament by Amy Siemon and Alexandra Bayliss of Wisconsin-Whitewater 8-3.
At second doubles, Zakiewicz and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo H.S.) dropped both of their contests. In their first match, the tandem fell 8-4 to Abby Martin of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Amy Unzicker of Western Illinois, and then dropped an 8-5 decision to Brooke Henry and Bethany Goeden of South Dakota State.
Valparaiso will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule next Saturday with a dual match at Robert Morris (Ill.). First serve is set for 10 a.m. in Chicago.
