Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) posted a singles victory, but that would be the only point Valparaiso would record as the Crusaders fell to Illinois State 6-1 on Saturday in Bloomington, Ill.

Scala needed several tie-breaks to post her win at fourth singles 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 11-9. Illinois State (7-6) won four of the other five singles contests in straight sets.

Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) won the first set at the top spot before falling 3-6, 7-5, 10-2. Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) fell 6-0, 6-1 at second singles while Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) lost 6-3, 6-1 at the third spot. Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at the fifth spot while Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) fell 7-6, 6-3 at the bottom of the order.

In doubles play, the Redbirds won all three matches by 8-4 scores.

Valparaiso (3-4) will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. CST match against IPFW in the Crusaders' final tune-up before Mid-Continent Conference play begins on Thursday.
