Scala Wins at Evansville; Crusaders in Three other Finals

Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) won the fourth flight of singles while Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) advanced to the finals in the fifth flight at the Evansville Invitational held this weekend in Evansville, Ind.

Scala earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Western Kentucky in the opening round, and advance to the finals by default. In the finals, Scala posted another 6-2, 6-0 win over Eastern Kentucky to claim the title.

Evangelist notched a 6-4, 6-3 win to open in the fifth flight over Southern Illinois. She then cruised 6-0, 6-0 over an opponent from Evansville in the semis, before falling to Western Kentucky 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 in the championship.

Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) each dropped their first round match in the first and third flights respectively before rebounding to win a pair of matches to claim fifth place. Janssen fell 6-0, 6-2 to Evansville before defeating Western Kentucky 7-5, 6-0 and Southern Indiana 8-4. Chada dropped a 6-3, 6-1 contest to Southern Illinois but defeated Southeast Missouri State 8-5 and Evansville 8-3.

In doubles play, the Crusaders advanced to the title contest in both flights one and two. At the top spot, Scala and Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) were 8-4 victors over Southern Indiana in the opening round and 9-7 winners over Southern Illinois in the semifinals. In the championship match, the duo fell 8-5 to a pair from Morehead State.

At second doubles, Chada and Evangelist breezed to an 8-0 win over Southeast Missouri State in the opening round and triumphed 8-4 against Evansville in the semis. They also fell 8-5 in the championship to Eastern Kentucky.

The Crusaders will next travel to Bourbonnais, Ill. on October 7 for a 2 p.m. match against Olivet Nazarene.
