Crusader Women Drop First Match in Puerto Rico

The Crusader women’s tennis team lost the opening game of its Puerto Rico trip on Thursday morning, falling 7-0 to Seton Hall. Despite showing tough play in No.2 and No.3 singles, the Crusaders were unable to take a point from the Big East school.

The Pirates claimed comfortable wins in each of the three doubles matches to sweep the point. Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) each lost their respective matches in No.1 and No.2 doubles by an 8-2 score line. Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s) and Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) were defeated 8-1 by their Pirate opponents in No.3 doubles.

Seton Hall continued its dominance in singles play, taking the full six points from the Crusaders. Hamel dropped the No.1 singles point 6-0, 6-0, while Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) would fall in No.6 singles by the same result. In No.5 singles, Seton Hall’s Julie Martiny was able to best Fredlake 6-0, 6-3.

Heuer looked to build another win-streak in No.3 singles, but was unable to do so in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat. Zakiewicz provided the Crusaders with the best chance of a point in No.2 singles. The senior won three games in the first set and four in the second in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

The Crusader women continue play in Puerto Rico tomorrow with a double-header. In the first match of the day, Valparaiso takes on Providence. The Crusaders then wrap-up their trip with a match against Augustana later on in the day.
