Women's Tennis Drops Spring Opener at WMU
Junior Paige Heuer fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to WMU's Meika Ashby Saturday in Kalamazoo.

A young Valpo women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to Western Michigan Saturday evening at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The Broncos, who were picked to finish 2nd in the Mid-American Conference, snatched the doubles point with victories at all three flights.

Valpo's rookie combo of Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) fell 6-1 to Barbare Eristavi/Olivia Myers at No. 2. WMU clinched the point at No. 3 after Denise Azcui and Katja Fevralev eked out a 6-4 win over Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) and Halle Roach (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville). Sophomore Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) and junior Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) battled Tracy Kuhle and Melina Lyubomirova to a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles before the Bronco pair emerged with a 7-6 (4) triumph.

Singles action was just as unkind to the Brown and Gold.

Hebble dropped a 6-1, 6-0 tilt to Myers atop singles play. Western Michigan commandeered a 3-0 lead thanks to Fevralev's 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Wind at No. 5. Kuhle got past Milanes, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 to secure the match.

No. 6 singles saw Azcui prevail 6-1, 6-3 over Roach before Lyubomirova upended Modesto 6-0, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 singles. Heuer gave Meika Ashby all she could handle at No. 3 before falling 6-4, 6-3.

The Crusaders will have two weeks off to prepare for their next match. Bradley welcomes the Brown and Gold to Peoria on Saturday, Jan. 30th at 2:00 pm.
