The Crusaders closed out their spring trip to Puerto Rico Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to East Carolina. Kat Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) did deliver ECU's Nicole LaDuca/Celia Ruiz their first loss in doubles play of the spring, though, defeating the Pirate pair 6-4 at No. 1.
ECU's Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina opened the match with a 6-1 victory over Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton)/Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) at No. 3. Hebble and Heuer came through with a 6-4 upset of LaDuca/Ruiz at No. 1 to knot the doubles play at 1-1. The loss was just the first of the spring for LaDuca and Ruiz. The Pirates' No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Sarjoo and Maria Storozheva responded with a 6-4 defeat of Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) and Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South).
The Pirates tallied singles wins at No. 2, 5, 6 for the 4-0 win.
Sarjoo defeated Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Storozheva got past Heuer, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2. Katie Hoch rounded out play with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Wind at No. 5.
Valpo (1-8) will return to Northwest Indiana where it'll prepare for Chicago State. The Crusaders and Cougars are scheduled to meet on Tuesday, March 29th in Chicago at 2 pm.
