The Valparaiso University freshman duo of Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) and Jelena Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday.
Czerwonka and Vujanic enjoyed a perfect weekend together at No. 1 doubles, defeating Northern Illinois (Molligoda/Youel) 6-3 on Saturday before besting Lewis (Trus/Adrejszki) 8-5 on Sunday, helping the Crusaders to a 5-2 victory over the Flyers.
Czerwonka is the team leader in doubles wins with nine. The two started playing together on Feb. 3 against Butler. It took time for them to find their groove, as they dropped two of their first three matches as a team. Now, the pair has hit its stride, posting a 2-0 record this past weekend.
Valpo previously swept the conference’s weekly awards on Jan. 23, when Czerwonka was named Singles Player of the Week and Czerwonka and Dao Sysouvanh earned Doubles Team of the Week.
The Crusaders (4-5) have three weeks off from match competition before returning to the court to take on Chaminade University of Honolulu on Monday, March 12 as part of the team’s spring break trip to Hawaii.
