Nelson Wins Three Times as Valpo Finishes Second at DePauw Quadrangular

Rachel Nelson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit H.S.) won three events, including Valparaiso's school record-setting 4x400m relay as the Crusaders finished in second place at a quadrangular meet in Greencastle, Ind. Indiana Wesleyan won the meet with 226 points to Valpo's 191, while DePauw, the meet host finished third with 163 points and Butler scored 112.

Nelson won the 800m dash with a time of 2:20.53 and the 1500m dash in 4:55.39 before closing her day as a member of the 4x400 that set a new school record with a time of 4:08.19. Lynnae Skogerboe (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.), Nelson, Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy), and Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) broke the 1998 record by .09 seconds.

Meyer also won the 400m dash by over two seconds on the afternoon with a time of 1:01.01, while Zellner won the 200m dash, breaking the tape in 27.06 seconds.

On the infield, Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) was a double winner for the Crusaders. She posted a mark of 37'1" in the shot put to win by 11 inches, then had a toss of 132'10" in the hammer throw for a 9'1" victory. The hammer victory marked a new meet record. Jessica Cherrington (Roseburg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.) won the javelin by nearly 21 feet with her heave of 115'3".

Valparaiso will return to the oval next Saturday as the Crusaders travel to Oxford, Ohio to compete in the Miami Invitational.
