Crusaders Still Second Heading into Final Day of Mid-Con Championships

Valparaiso remains in second place on Friday after completing the second day of the Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Kansas City, Mo.

The Crusaders have totaled 62 points, trailing just Western Illinois' 108 in the team standings. Southern Utah is third with 60 points, followed by Oral Roberts (55) and UMKC (27). Chicago State has yet to score.

Valpo had three individuals score for the Brown and Gold in the shot put led by Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.). The senior finished third with a toss of 40'0 ¾" just 11½ inches ahead of teammate Emilie Marsicek (Spaluding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.) in fourth place. Jessica Cherrington (Roseberg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.) was eight with a mark of 34'2 ¾".

Cherrington and Marsicek also placed in the javelin. Cherrington was second with her toss of 130'0" while Marsicek was seventh with a throw of 110'1".

The long jump saw Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) finish third with a leap of 18'1".

The only final on the track saw Jobeth Schmiesing (Mankato, Minn./West H.S.) and Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall H.S.) finish third and fourth respectively in the 3,000m steeplechase. Schmiesing finished in 11:30.13 while Billstrom was 13.57 seconds behind. Lauren McLaughlin (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View H.S.) took eighth with a time of 13:00.24.

In the heptathlon, Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area H.S.) finished with 3,349 points to lead Valpo, finishing ninth overall.

Valpo will conclude competition on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
