Saturday, April 8, 2006
Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall H.S.) shattered her own school record in the 3,000m steeplechase, and the Crusader 4x100m relay team also set a new school mark as Valparaiso finished sixth Saturday at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.

The Brown and Gold totaled 32 points on the meet, good for sixth out of 16 competing schools. The host RedHawks captured the team title, compiling 164.5 points.

Billstrom, who had already lowered the record in the steeplechase by eight seconds this year, smashed her own mark by over 15 seconds, crossing the line in 10:58.94. The time was good for a second-place finish, the best individual showing on the day by a Crusader.

Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan H.S.), Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area H.S.), Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy), and Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) teamed up in the 4x100m relay to break an eight-year old school record in the event. The four crossed the line in 48.63 seconds, finishing fifth.

All four runners also posted at least one individual top-ten finish on the day. Body placed sixth in the triple jump, leaping 35'3 ¾", and ran a time of 25.69 seconds in the 200m dash, recording a seventh-place finish. Kloth came home tenth in the 100m dash with a time of 12.87 seconds.

Zellner notched two top-tens, finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:05.38) and tenth in the 100m hurdles (16.04). Wilson tallied a sixth-place finish of her own in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 14.85 seconds.

Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) finished fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:15.69. The mark moves Nunnelly into third all-time in Crusader history in the event, just .54 of a second off of the school record. Nunnelly also registered a sixth-place finish in the 1,500m run (4:38.67).

Laura Rolf (Rochester, Mich./Lutheran Northwest H.S.) moved into third on Valpo's all-time chart in the 5,000m run. Her time of 17:49.54 was seventh-best in the event.

Valparaiso returns to the track next weekend to take part in the Pacesetter Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Action begins Friday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Indiana State University, before moving to the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute for Saturday's events, beginning at 11:00 a.m. CDT.
