The Valparaiso women’s track and field team defeated Horizon League foes UIC (69-44) and Loyola (72-38), as well as non-conference opponent Chicago State (70-28), Friday evening at the Panther Tune-Up in Milwaukee, Wis.  Only the host Panthers defeated the Crusaders (84-52) in the meet that featured dual-meet scoring.

Senior Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) led the Crusaders on the meet, earning three individual top-five finishes.  Wilson took first place in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 9.04 seconds.  She posted a third-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 17’9”, and followed with a jump of 38’4” in the triple jump, good for fourth place and just an inch shy of her own school record.

In addition, Wilson anchored Valpo’s 4x400m relay squad, which also included Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan), Amy Anderson (Morton, Ill./Morton) and Lakisha Lane (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park).  The quartet won the event by over a second and a half, crossing the line with a time of 4:06.65.

Lane and Anderson each also posted individual top-five placements as well.  Lane came home third in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.73, the fourth-fastest effort in school history, and also placed fourth in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 9.38.  Anderson completed the 400m dash in 1:04.49, good for a fifth-place finish.

Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau) took top honors in the shot put Friday, recording a distance of 43’8 ½”.  She also placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 48’7 ½”, the second-farthest toss all-time at Valpo.  Also posting top-five finishes were Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area), who came in third place in the 60m dash in 7.98 seconds, tied for third-fastest in program history, and Alyssa Bradford (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago), who ran the 800m run in 2:23.63, good for fourth place.

Valparaiso returns to the track for the two-day Horizon League Indoor Championships beginning Saturday, March 1 at 8 a.m. in Kent, Ohio.
