Day 1 Results

Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan) lowered her own school record in the 60m dash Saturday as the Valparaiso women’s track and field squad competed at the Horizon League Indoor Championships in Kent, Ohio.

The Crusaders earned one point on the opening day of competition, and enter the final day in eighth place.  Milwaukee leads the team standings with 69 points.

Body completed her qualifying heat in 7.90 seconds, lowering her own program standard by two-hundredths of a second and qualifying for tomorrow’s event finals.  Two other Crusaders also moved into fourth place in Valpo history in their respective events Saturday, as Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) covered the 200m dash in 26.37 seconds, while Lakisha Lane (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park) ran the 400m dash in 1:00.82, although neither qualified for Sunday’s event finals.

Lane did post a qualifying time in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 9.06 seconds.  She will be joined in the event final by Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain), who came home with a time of 9.11 seconds.  Wilson also competed Saturday in the long jump, finishing eighth with a leap of 16’7”.

Among the other Crusaders who competed Saturday were Windy Santa Cruz (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek), who led Valpo in the 800m run with a time of 2:29.68, and Rachel Howell (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), who paced the squad in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in 20:49.33.  On the infield, Ini Umana (Cottage Grove, Wis./Park) was the top Crusader finisher in the weight throw, recording a distance of 43’7”, while in the pentathlon, Carissa Heinold (Charleston, Ill./Charleston) tallied 2,186 points to finish sixth.

The Crusaders return to the track in Kent Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for the second day of the two-day meet.
