Overbo Promoted to Associate Head Coach

Valparaiso Track & Field head coach Ryan Moore has announced that current assistant coach James Overbo has been promoted to the program’s associate head coach position. Overbo has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track & field teams.

Overbo enters his sixth season as a member of the Crusader track & field coaching staff. He will continue to work primarily with the jumpers, as well as the javelin throwers and vaulters. In his new role as associate head coach, he will also be responsible for organizing travel, purchasing equipment, and dealing with any other logistical concerns that arise throughout the course of the season.

During his time at Valparaiso, Overbo has been instrumental in developing and coaching athletes into top competitors. As a result, his athletes, and the program in general, have experienced plenty of success. Under his guidance, athletes have gone on to break school records, earn Horizon League honors, and win conference championships.

Overbo has produced a trio of conference champions in the javelin throw – Brett Maynard in 2009, Vince Liuzzo in 2010, and most recently, Jeremy Getz in 2013.  Getz threw for a conference record on his way to earning a championship. His jumpers have also been successful, as highlighted by the success of Jarrett Mickens, a four-time All-Horizon League honoree and Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2011 Horizon League Indoor Championships.

“James has been a valuable asset to this program over the past five years,” said head coach Ryan Moore. “His leadership on the track has inspired the athletes he works with daily on basis, and his willingness to do whatever is needed to help the team has led me to make the move in promoting him to role of associate head coach.  It is truly a pleasure to work along side him and share in the goal of making this team the very best that it can be each year.”
