Zehel, Peters Crowned Champions at HL Outdoor Championships

Nicole Zehel (Wixom, Mich./Lutheran Westland) and Sarah Peters (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) led the Crusader women at day two of the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, winning the title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and pole vault, respectively.

Zehel won the 3,000-meter steeplechase title handily, breaking the tape in 11:10.96 – nearly eight seconds faster than the runner-up. In addition to running a season-best time, Zehel also registered the second-best time in program history in the event.

Peters was crowned champion in the pole vault after clearing 10’8” in her first attempt at the height. The height was good for fifth all-time in program history.

Ashley Heisey (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) cleared 9’0 ¼” in the pole vault for a ninth-place finish.

Elsewhere at the championships, Cleo Holt (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) advanced to the finals of the 100-meter dash, Kelli Wosick (Mount Prospect, Ill./Saint Viator) qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash, and Elizabeth Bloy (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) advanced to the finals in the 800-meter run.

After day two, the Valparaiso women sit at third-place with 46 points, trailing second-place Wright State by 10 points. Youngstown State leads the field with 78 points.
