Two School Records Fall in Season Opener at Lewis

The Valparaiso women's track and field team set a pair of school records at Lewis Season Opener held on Saturday afternoon in a non-scoring meet.

Martha Josephson (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes H.S.) broke her own school mark in the high jump on her way to a second place finish. Her leap of 5'4" bettered her mark from last season by ¼".

The 4x400m relay also set a new school standard. The team of Amanda Meyer (Hudson, Wis./Somerset H.S.), Mary Frisch (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), Rachel Nelson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit H.S.), and Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) won the race with a time of 4:10.52, bettering the previous mark set last year by .81 seconds.

Also on the track, Frisch turned in a third place performance in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.73 seconds, while Kara Miller (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier H.S.) led Valpo in the 55m dash with a time of 8.41 seconds.

Zellner earned a runner-up finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.89, while placing eighth in the 200m (28.39 seconds).

Elizabeth Kinneer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton H.S.) won the 3,000m run, crossing the finish in 12:03.62.

On the infield, Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) led the Brown and Gold in the weight throw with a third place finish with a mark of 43'4 ½". She also finished third in the shot put with a toss of 37'10 ¾".

Meyer turned in a third place finish in the pole vault, clearing 9'6", while also leaping 16'1" in the long jump. Lindsay Haan (Westminster, Colo./Denver Lutheran H.S.) placed second in the triple jump with a 33'4" jump.

Valpo will take six weeks off before returning to action on Jan. 18 at the Carthage D1 Invitational.
