Crusaders Post Runner-Up Finish at Chicagoland Championships

Three more school records were set by the Valparaiso women's track and field team on Friday evening as the Crusaders earned a second place finish at the Chicagoland Championships held in Romeoville, Ill.

The Crusaders tallied 87 points on the evening, trailing just Northern Illinois in the team standings. The Huskies scored 162.5 points. Lewis was third with 76 points in the field of 16 schools.

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) rebroke two of her own marks set earlier this season. The freshman won the triple jump with a leap of 37'7 ¼", nearly an inch further than her previous best. She also finished second in the 55m hurdles, improving on her school mark in that event by .02 seconds with her time of 8.42 seconds. Wilson also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17'6 ¾".

Mary Frisch (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) set the other new school mark on the night, finishing eighth in the 200m hurdles. Her time of 31.34 seconds bettered Becky Eager's 2002 mark of 31.62 seconds. Frisch also finished sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:02.65.

Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) finished fourth for the Crusaders in the 200m dash with a time of 26.56 seconds, while Patricia Kloth (Medford, Wis./Medford Area H.S.) was eighth with a time of 27.49 seconds.

Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) earned a runner-up finish in the 800m with a time of 2:20.08, while teammate Jennifer Plaskota (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) was sixth with a time of 2:23.74. Heidi Nathan (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford H.S.) finished fourth and Lisa Schroeck (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy ) with times of 19:11.86 and 19:17.89.

On the infield, Amanda Meyer (Hudson, Wis./Somerset H.S.) and Katrina Roberson (Shelton, Wash./Shelton H.S.) both cleared 10'4" in the pole vault to place third and fourth respectively. Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) placed third in the shot put with a toss of 41'3 ¾" and was fourth in the weight throw with a heave of 54'5 ½". Rachel Liptak (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley H.S.) was seventh in the weight with a toss of 45'10 ½".

Valpo will close out the indoor portion of its schedule on February 28 and March 1 at the Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Championships. Events begin at 11 a.m. CST in Flagstaff, Ariz.
