Crusaders Win DePauw Quadrangular

Valparaiso opened the 2005 outdoor track and field season with a victory at the DePauw Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind.

The Crusaders tallied 201 points, 17 ahead of runner-up DePauw. Indiana Wesleyan finished third with 175 points and Butler totaled 128.

Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.) won the shot put setting a new school and meet record in the process with her toss of 43' 0 ¼". Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) led Valpo to a win in the discus with a toss of 119'9" while also winning the hammer throw setting a meet record with a toss of 154'4". Jessica Cherrington (Roseberg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.) completed a sweep of the throws for the Crusaders with a win in the javelin with a mark of 112'3".

Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) earned Valpo's other victory on the day, winning the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:11.68. She also finished second in the 100m event with a time of 16.08 seconds.

Valpo will head to Oxford, Ohio on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Miami Invitational.
