Three More School Records Fall as Valpo Finishes Fourth at Mid-Con Championships

Melanie Wilson (Saint Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain H.S.) broke two of her own school records, while Amanda Body (Harlan, Ky./Harlan H.S.) lowered the school mark in the 200m dash for the second time in two days on the final day of competition at the Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Monday in Bloomington, Ill. Valparaiso finished the meet in fourth place.

The Crusaders tallied 81 points over the two days of competition, edging out UMKC by 1.5 points for the fourth spot. Oral Roberts took home top team honors, compiling 195 points, while Western Illinois (124) and Southern Utah (114) claimed second and third place, respectively. Chicago State rounded out the team scoring with 11.5 points.

Wilson finished runner-up in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 8.99 seconds. The time edged out her previous school record by one-hundredth of a second. Wilson went on to place third in the triple jump. Her leap of 38'5" bettered her previous record by an inch.

Body finished fifth Monday in the finals of the 200m dash with a time of 25.62 seconds, lowering the school record she had set in the preliminaries Sunday by another tenth of a second. Body also competed in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 36'.

Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) posted two top-three finishes Monday, bringing her tally for the meet to three. Nunnelly placed third in the 800m run, coming home in 2:15.44. Her time in the event ranks second on Valpo's all-time list.

Nunnelly also recorded a second-place finish in the one mile run, leading a contingent of four Valpo runners in the event. Nunnelly's time of 4:56.92 improved upon her second-best time in school history. Laura Rolf (Rochester, Mich./Lutheran Northwest H.S.) was the next Crusader to cross the line, finishing fifth in 5:04.72.

Jobeth Schmiesing (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West H.S.) registered a time of 5:20.65, good for eighth place, while Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall H.S.) finished right behind her in ninth with a time of 5:22.40.

Rolf and Billstrom also represented the Brown and Gold in the 5,000m run. Rolf moved into third on Valpo's all-time list in the event, crossing the line in 18:03.46, finishing fourth. Billstrom recorded a sixth-place finish with her time of 18:25.22.

Valparaiso wraps up its 2006 indoor season this weekend, taking part in the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame, Ind. Action begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 4.
