19 Crusaders Earn Academic All-League Recognition

Valparaiso placed 19 student-athletes over seven sports on the Horizon League's 2013 Spring Academic All-League Teams, as announced by the league office. The 19 honorees tied for the most from any league institution.

Outdoor track and field and golf each boasted six honorees, as four men and two women earned accolades in each sport. Four Crusader baseball players and two softball players received honors, while one men's tennis player rounded out the Valpo contingent of award recipients.

Overall during the 2012-2013 academic year, 38 Crusaders received Academic All-Horizon League recognition.

Baseball (4)
Andrew Bain - Sr. - A First Team All-Horizon League honoree and a member of the league's All-Tournament Team. Hit .309 with 35 runs scored, 24 RBIs, and a team-high 10 doubles. Ranked second in the league with 68 hits. Owns a 3.802 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major. Three-time Academic All-HL honoree.
Karch Kowalczyk - Sr./Jr. - Horizon League Relief Pitcher of the Year and a Second Team All-League choice. Tallied 12 saves in 24 appearances, posting a 1.73 ERA as opponents hit just .189 off of him. MVP of the Horizon League Championship after saving all three of Valpo's tournament wins. Owns a 3.494 cumulative GPA as a biology and chemistry double major.
Spencer Mahoney - So. - A First Team All-Horizon League honoree and a member of the league's All-Tournament Team. Hit .271 on the season with 38 runs scored and 31 walks. Named to NCAA Tournament Bloomington Regional All-Tournament Team after going 5-for-12 in three games, including his first career homer in win over Florida. Owns a 3.242 cumulative GPA as a psychology and secondary education double major.
Tanner Vavra - Sr. - A Second Team All-Horizon League selection. Led the league in runs scored (43) and hits (73) while ranking among the top-five in batting average (.330) and on-base percentage (.410). Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th round of the MLB Draft. Owns a 3.627 cumulative GPA as a sports management major.

Softball (2)
Angie Doerffler - Jr. - Started all 62 games for the Crusaders at shortstop, scoring 23 runs and tallying 18 RBIs on the season. Named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team for a second straight year, going 8-for-18 over Valpo's six tournament games. Owns a 3.739 cumulative GPA as a mathematics and political science double major. Two-time Academic All-HL honoree.
Joylyn Ichiyama - 5th/Sr. - A First Team All-Horizon League selection for the second straight season. Finished second in the league in runs scored (40), fourth in RBIs (39) and fourth in hits (59). Named to HL All-Tournament Team after going 6-of-17 and setting a new tournament record with nine runs scored. Owns a 3.229 cumulative GPA working towards her master's in health administration.

Men's Tennis (1)
Eric Honert - Jr. - A Second Team All-Horizon League honoree. Led Crusaders with 19 singles victories on the year, the third-most in a single season in program history, while playing at first singles. Named HL Player of the Week on April 9. Owns a 3.899 cumulative GPA as a mechanical engineering major. Two-time Academic All-HL selection.

Men's Golf (4)
Austin Gaugert - Sr. - An All-Horizon League honoree. Set a new program record for single-season scoring average (74.7). Earned six top-ten finishes, including five top-fives, over his 12 tournaments. Shot a team-best 10 rounds of par or better out of 32 rounds. Owns a 3.392 cumulative GPA as a marketing and sports management double major.
Kyle Henning - Jr. - An All-Horizon League selection. Ranked second on the team with a 75.2 scoring average, the second-best single-season mark in program history. Won DePaul's John Dallio Memorial, one of five top-five finishes. Earned All-Tournament honors at the HL Championship after a fifth-place finish. Owns a 3.805 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major. Two-time Academic All-HL choice.
Thomas Wettstein - Jr. - Earned medalist honors at the 2013 Horizon League Championship, shooting a 2-under 214 to win by four shots. Ranked third on the team in stroke average (75.4), the fourth-best single-season mark in program history. Owns a 3.715 cumulative GPA as a finance major.
Eric Winters - So. - Posted a 78.0 scoring average on the season. Helped Valpo to team win at the Bradley Invitational with an eighth-place individual finish. Owns a 3.806 cumulative GPA as a finance major.

Women's Golf (2)
Michelle Kleckner - Jr. - An All-Horizon League honoree. Ranked second on the team with an 80.0 scoring average, the second-best single-season mark in program history. Won the Crusader Spring Invitational and finished in the top five at the Dayton Fall Invitational. Owns a 3.968 cumulative GPA as a mathematics and secondary education double major. Two-time Academic All-HL selection.
Kelly Voigt - Jr. - Member of All-Horizon League team. Named to All-Tournament Team after finishing second at the HL Championship. Set new program records for single round, tournament and season (77.5) scoring marks. Won the Dayton Fall Invitational and the CSU Cougar Classic. Owns a 3.349 cumulative GPA as a physical education and secondary education double major.

Men's Outdoor Track and Field (4)
Wally Bradford - Sr. - Led Crusaders during outdoor season in 800m (1:56.12) and 1500m (3:57.02) runs. Placed fifth at the HL Outdoor Championships in the 1500m run. Owns a 3.450 cumulative GPA as an elementary education major. Three-time Academic All-HL selection.
Jacob Frey - So. - Won the discus throw at the HL Outdoor Championships with a toss of 154'11". Also finished fifth at the league meet in the hammer throw. Paced Valpo in both the discus and hammer throws during the outdoor season. Owns a 3.676 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major. Two-time Academic All-HL choice.
Jeremy Getz - So. - Smashed Valpo's previous modern-era javelin throw record with a top mark of 208'3". Won the HL championship in the javelin by over nine feet and advanced to NCAA regionals. Owns a 3.661 cumulative GPA as a communication major.
Andrew Rixon - Sr. - Earned three top-tens at HL Outdoor Championships: javelin throw (third), hammer throw (sixth) and shot put (eighth). Led Crusaders during outdoor season in the shot put (44'7 1/2") and ranked second in the hammer and the javelin. Owns a 3.644 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major. Five-time Academic All-HL honoree.

Women's Outdoor Track and Field (2)
Jessica Richardson - So. - Finished third in the 10K and sixth in the 5K at the HL Outdoor Championships. Led Valpo during the outdoor season in both the 5K (17:40.63) and 10K (36:47.16). Owns a 3.925 cumulative GPA as an economics and mathematics double major. Three-time Academic All-HL selection.
Jazmin Taylor - So. - Earned runner-up finish in the high jump at the HL Outdoor Championships, clearing 5'3 1/4". Set a new school record in the event as well. Owns a 3.351 cumulative GPA as a chemistry and secondary education double major.
