Emily Richardson threw the 10th no-hitter in the history of the Valparaiso University softball program, shutting down North Carolina Central in a 3-0 victory on Feb. 18, a performance which comes in eighth in our countdown of the Top 10 moments of the year in Valpo Athletics.
Richardson pitched around a leadoff walk in the first inning, retiring the next 15 hitters she faced. She stranded another runner on base in the sixth, and then after a leadoff walk in the seventh, struck out back-to-back batters before inducing a foul out to close out the no-no.
The no-hitter was the first by a Valpo player since 2013, and the first seven-inning no-hitter since 2002. Richardson, who struck out a career-high 11 batters in the no-hitter, had a tremendous start to the 2018 campaign, as just eight days prior to the no-no, she had taken a no-hitter into the seventh inning in an eventual one-hit blanking of Tennessee State.
The countdown continues on Wednesday as we unveil the No. 7 moment of the year in Valpo Athletics.
