Marc Hull Named Special Teams Coordinator / Safeties Coach

The Valparaiso University football program has announced the hiring of Marc Hull, who will serve as special teams coordinator and safeties coach under head coach Landon Fox.

Hull joins the Beacons from the professional coaching ranks after serving as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League (USFL). He also owns collegiate coaching experience as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Slippery Rock University from 2015-2021.

Earlier in his coaching career, Hull served as a secondary coach and graduate assistant at Shippensburg University in 2013 and 2014 after working as a coaching intern (secondary) for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the summer of 2013. He also gained experience as the outside linebackers coach at Kentucky Christian University (2012) and instructed linebackers, safeties and special teams at West LA College (2010-2011).

“We’re very fortunate to hire someone with extensive special teams knowledge,” Fox said. “It’s great to have a combination of professional and collegiate experience with success at both levels. He understands both sides of it after having coached for the Maulers and at a very successful Division-II program at Slippery Rock.”

After graduating from Narbonne High School in Los Angeles in 2003, Hull played collegiately at San Diego State University, where he earned four varsity letters as a linebacker from 2003-2007. He received an invite to Chicago Bears Rookie Minicamp in 2008.

During his time in Pittsburgh, Hull helped lead the Maulers to an impressive turnaround, going from the worst record in the league to a berth in the USFL Championship Game and a North Division championship. Two of his three specialists moved on to NFL rosters.

During Hull’s tenure at Slippery Rock, The Rock boasted a 60-16 record including three straight PSAC West Championships. His team won the PSAC title in 2015, reached the national quarterfinals in 2018 and the Division-II national semifinals in 2019, a year that featured a 13-1 mark, the best in program history.

“I am very excited and honored to join the Valpo Football staff,” Hull said. “Coach Fox has laid out a vision for developing young men on and off the field combined with the wealth of football knowledge and desire for excellence on this team. The future is bright for the Brown and Gold. I can’t wait to face the challenges of coaching in the Pioneer Football League and look forward to developing great relationships and memories at Valpo.”

Hull earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from San Diego State in 2008 before going on to earn his master’s in organizational development and leadership with a concentration in higher education structure and policy in December 2014.

What They’re Saying About Coach Hull

Matt Mengel, Five-Year Pro Specialist CFL/USFL, Team Captain of 2023 Pittsburgh Maulers: “Marc Hull set an unparalleled standard of excellence and innovation in the USFL. His strategic genius and relentless pursuit of perfection have firmly established him as one of the greatest special teams coaches in all of football in my eyes. Marc Hull’s greatness extends beyond his strategic acumen; he is a true players’ coach. He fosters an environment of trust, respect and relentless support. His ability to inspire and elevate his players has made him beloved by those he has coached, including myself.”

J.C. Morgan, Millersville University Head Coach: “Marc Hull is a knowledgeable coach who has tremendous passion for the game of football. He connects well with the young men who he coaches and has the ability to get the best out of them. I am very confident that he will be successful at Valpo.”

Jarren Horton, Pittsburgh Maulers Defensive Coordinator: “Marc demonstrates knowledge in multiple facets of the game. Playing FBS Linebacker at a high level helps him understand defense in both the run game and coverage. He has a wealth of experience in the special teams arena with both professional and collegiate coordinating experience, having numerous all conference and all-pro players on special teams and defense. Marc instantly makes your team better when he steps in the door. A special teams coordinator works with every player on the team, so having somebody as special as Marc is a true luxury.”

Chris Conrad, Slippery Rock Assistant Head Coach / Offensive Line Coach: “Coach Hull is a tremendous special teams coach. The amount of time spent on making the special teams unit a weapon for us, on top of his own position group, speaks volumes. Having one of the top units in the USFL after SRU did not surprise me at all. Making the special teams unit one third of the game that people can count on was always his mission.”

Allen Gant, Fordham Defensive Coordinator: “Marc is a good coach and an even better man. I enjoyed working with him during our championship run at Slippery Rock in 2019. Valpo is blessed to have him.”
