The Valparaiso men's tennis team concluded its regular season Saturday with a tight 5-2 loss to Cleveland State at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) won their 18th consecutive doubles match at No. 2, defeating Nolan Marks/Matt Kuelker 8-5.
The Vikings rallied back to take the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
Jorg Van der Vloet and Manuel Bellutti got past Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley)/Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) 8-6 at the third spot before Ali Shabib and Joe VanMeter scored a similar 8-6 triumph at No. 1.
Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Shabib at No. 2 singles. The freshman boosted his singles record to 24-9, 4-2 in Horizon League play.
The Crusaders pulled ahead 2-1 thanks to Dunn's 6-3, 6-3 win over Marks at No. 6. The victory improved Dunn to 6-0 in conference play.
CSU's Matt Kuelker took a 6-2, 7-5 match over Schorsch at No. 1. Van der Vloet followed with a three-set win over Honert, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.
Bellutti outlasted Emhardt at No. 5 to earn a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 match-clinching win.
Van Meter also rallied back after dropping the first set at No. 4. He beat Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 for a 5-2 final.
The Crusaders record moved to 18-8 overall, 3-3 in the Horizon League. They'll take on the UIC Flames (5-10, 2-4 Horizon) in the first round of the Horizon League Conference Tournament next week in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
