A pair of sophomores represented the Valparaiso University volleyball team on the All-Tournament Team at the EIU Panther Invitational, as Brittany Anderson (East Chicago, Ind./Bishop Noll) and Peyton McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) received the accolades at the tournament’s conclusion Sunday.
Anderson set the Valpo offense all tournament long as the Crusaders hit at a .250 clip over the four matches, handing out 10.62 assists/set. The sophomore added 3.19 digs/set in the back row and contributed 13 blocks, including a career-high tying five against both Saint Francis (Pa.) and Iona. Anderson also tied her career high with 19 digs against Saint Francis and posted double-doubles in each of the first three matches of the season.
McCarthy led Valpo on both sides of the ball, averaging a team-best 2.87 kills/set for the weekend on .341 hitting and also tallying 1.47 blocks/set. The sophomore smashed her previous career high in the season opener, recording 17 kills on .364 hitting against Fresno State. McCarthy also set a new career best with seven blocks in the sweep of Iona and led Valpo with six blocks as well against host Eastern Illinois.
For Anderson, it was the third All-Tournament selection of her career, while McCarthy earned an All-Tournament accolade for the first time.
Valpo finished the EIU Panther Invitational in second place with a 3-1 record, coming in just behind Fresno State in the final standings. The Crusaders return to action next weekend at the Chippewa Invitational, hosted by Central Michigan.
