Mike Longyear is starting his fourth season as the Valparaiso women’s golf volunteer assistant coach.

Longyear served as the assistant golf coach for the nationally-ranked No. 12 Women’s University of California Davis golf team (2009-2010) helping them to two straight Big West titles under legendary coach Anne Walker, who is currently at Stanford.

Longyear’s first career choice out of college was teaching and coaching. He coached boys golf and boys' varsity basketball at Ann Arbor Greenhills prep school from (1997-2001) where he helped lead the Gryphons to five consecutive state golf appearances including back- to- back state championship runner up finishes, he also coached Varsity boys golf at Stevensville Lakeshore helping them to their first SMAC title in decades (2016-2019).

Longyear has been nominated by his peers for numerous Michigan PGA awards,  and has been the Club leader for several big events including the PGA Tours Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (2008).

As a player Longyear won several events on the Western Michigan PGA Tour and recently won his second Tom Doak Cup Championship (2018).

Longyear has been listed as one of Titleist’s top 100 instructors.  As an instructor you might have seen Mike coaching some of the many PGA-LPGA-Senior PGA tour players he has coached on all three tours or one of the many up and coming juniors he has developed.  In addition to facilitating tournaments, playing, and teaching you may have heard Mike on WSJM Sports radio discussing “The Majors” in golf.

Longyear has served as the PGA General Manager at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind. since 2021.  Before that, Longyear was the Head PGA Golf Professional/Director of Instruction at the Nationally ranked Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgman, Michigan. Longyear has been employed as a PGA General Manager/Golf Professional since 1992.

Longyear has a few unique accomplishments in the game of golf - winning the Men's club Championship at Twin Lakes Golf Club at age 13, just three years after picking up the game.  In addition, as a four-year high school varsity player, he had back-to-back eagles in an OHSAA state record performance. Finally, he once birdied the last seven holes to finish his round at the Oak Pointe Honors course.
