Valparaiso came up just short in its bid for the Crusaders’ first Horizon League victory of the season on Sunday as the Brown and Gold dropped a 4-3 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in Green Bay, Wis.
Valpo and Green Bay split the six singles matches with the Crusaders winning at positions four through six. Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) defeated Callee Conda 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles for the Brown and Gold while Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) was a 6-4, 7-5 victor over Laura Bartingale at the fifth position. Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) added a 6-3, 6-0 win at the sixth spot over Kari Petrashek.
Green Bay (1-11, 1-2 Horizon League) took home wins at first through third singles though. Emily Lawent was a 6-3, 6-0 winner against Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) at the top of the order while Lauryn Grimando topped Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 6-1, 6-4 at third singles. In the only three set match of the day, Kelly Stadum downed Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 at the second spot.
The Phoenix swept the doubles contests in what proved to be an important point. Grimando and Lawent were 8-0 victors over Schartz and Keifer at the top spot while Stadum and Bartingale downed Wingstrom and Sajevic 8-6. Conda and Petrashek defeated Gustafson and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) 8-4 at third doubles.
Valparaiso (2-8, 0-3) will return to action on Wednesday as the Crusaders host IPFW. First serve is set for 2 p.m. CDT.
