Silva, Steven Find Summer Success

Two members of the Valparaiso University tennis program have turned in noteworthy results this summer as the start of the 2024-25 season fast approaches. Rising junior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) reached the finals of the Texas A&M ITA Summer Masters Series powered by WTN this past weekend, while incoming freshman Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) won a doubles championship earlier this summer.

Silva started her tournament run with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lauren Littell (Baylor) in the Round of 16. She went on to defeat Maya Diyashev on a third-set tiebreak 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 in the quarterfinal round. Silva strolled past Josephine Lombardi 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Drew Morris (SMU) 6-1, 7-5 in the title match. Silva pushed Morris to the brink with three set points in Set 2.

Steven’s success came as part of the ITA Summer Points Race series hosted by Wichita State from June 29 to July 1. She teamed up with Paige Stranghoner to win the doubles title. They defeated Josline Carter and Joanna Carter 8-0 in the Round of 16 before outdoing Mia Jaramillo and Molly Gaddis 8-4 in the quarterfinal round. The run continued with an 8-4 win over Emma Sweeney and Lauren Sweeney in the semifinals and concluded with an 8-4 victory over Jasel Bailey and Quinn Leos to take the title.

Silva’s already-accomplished collegiate career includes earning the 2022-23 Missouri Valley Conference Flight 2 Singles Championship, while Steven is set to begin her rookie campaign with the Beacons.
