The Valparaiso University track & field programs rounded the first weekend of the 2024-25 season as several multi-event athletes competed in Illinois State's John Coughlan Invite, which concluded on Saturday in Normal, Ill. The Beacons broke two more program records to finish with five for the weekend.
How It Happened
- Sophomore AJ Walsh (Lombard, Ill. / IC Catholic Prep) compiled 4,598 points in the heptathlon, placing third in a seven-athlete field. He outdid the previous program record of 4,413 set by Elijah Owen in 2015.
- On the women's side, junior Katie Koryczan (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point) bettered her own pentathlon program standard of 2,583 set last season by compiling a score of 2,751. She placed third of six.
- Junior Brian Sponaugle (Milton, De. / Cape Henlopen) produced a score of 4,123 that ranks fourth in program history.
- On Saturday, Koryczan set PRs in the 60m (9.67), high jump (1.47, 4-9.75) and shot put (8.81m, 28-11). Walsh posted a PR in the pole vault (3.59m, 9-1.75), as did Sponaugle, who led the team at 3.69m (12-1.25). Sponaugle also had a PR in the 60 (9.82) and finished in the fastest time among competitors in the 1000 (2:52.94).
