Saturday's Alumni Tailgate to Highlight Weekend Series vs. Evansville

With nine games remaining in the Missouri Valley Conference season, every game is important as the Valparaiso University baseball team attempts to make up enough ground to earn a spot in the eight-team field for the upcoming MVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind. The Purple Aces, who will host that event later this month, will make their way to Valpo for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday. Western Michigan Outlasts Valpo in 15-Inning Marathon

The Valparaiso University baseball team engaged in one of the longest games in the nation this season in terms of innings played and the team’s longest contest in 12 years on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening in Kalamazoo, Mich. Host Western Michigan outlasted the Beacons, prevailing 8-6 on a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 15th.

Valpo Drills Eight Home Runs, Ryan Robs Grand Slam in Eye-Popping Blowout of UIC

The Valparaiso University baseball team slugged eight home runs – its most in a single game on record and in at least two decades – and enjoyed its most lopsided win in 14 years on Sunday afternoon, blitzing UIC 20-0 in seven innings at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago. The Beacons scored nine times in the fourth and had crooked numbers in each of the first four frames on their way to the win. Although the offense was the story of the day, it was a defensive gem that marked the biggest play as Alex Ryan (Lake Mills, Wis. / Lakeside Lutheran) robbed a UIC grand slam to aid a strong outing by Bryce Konitzer (Mukwonago, Wis. / Mukwonago [Oakland]), who went the distance and threw a shutout. Carson Husmann (Hanna, Ind. / South Central [Bradley]) homered twice including a grand slam.

Lockwood Throws Six Shutout Innings; UIC Rallies Late

Starting pitcher Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) threw six shutout innings and the Valparaiso University baseball team led 2-0 in the seventh and 2-1 in the eighth, but host UIC rallied with two in the bottom of the eighth to win 3-2 at Curtis Granderson Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Chicago. The Beacons have dropped both games in the series despite outhitting the Flames in both contests. Defense remained a Beacon bright spot as Valpo did not commit an error and made several dandy plays.

Unlucky Bounce Costs Beacons in Series Opener at UIC

The Valparaiso University baseball team got home runs from Carson Husmann (Hanna, Ind. / South Central [Bradley]) and Alex Ryan, (Lake Mills, Wis. / Lakeside Lutheran) but host UIC prevailed 8-6 at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago on a rainy Friday afternoon. An unlucky bounce changed the complexion of the game as Valpo would have tied the game at seven on a double by Husmann in the eighth, but the ball hopped over the wall for a ground-rule double and the runner from first was forced to hold at third, where he was eventually stranded.

The Valparaiso University baseball team will return to the road after back-to-back home weekends with the short journey to UIC for a three-game weekend series that is scheduled to begin under the lights on Friday night in Chicago. Every game is big for the Beacons as they need to make up ground in the race to qualify for the conference tournament, but there is still plenty of baseball to be played with four regular-season series remaining.
