Three Valparaiso University men’s soccer players were recognized on Wednesday as the Missouri Valley Conference unveiled its 2019 Scholar-Athlete honorees. Senior Dylan Waugaman (Houston, Texas / Friendswood [Oregon State]) was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team, while sophomore Mattia Dabala (Venice, Italy / Maria Lazzari) and senior Adan Garcia (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal School of Dallas) earned MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention.

Men’s Soccer Edged in Overtime in MVC Tournament Quarterfinal
The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team led for much of the match, but saw a quality effort come up shy in a season-closing 2-1 overtime defeat to Drake on a frigid Wednesday afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. The Bulldogs tied the match in the 87th minute on a shot that came from nearly the midfield stripe, then won it on a golden goal in the second overtime. Valpo’s goal was a beauty from Mason Marcey (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Christian [Radford]) in the first half.

Men's Soccer Set for MVC Tournament at Loyola
From the time the season kicked off, Valparaiso University men’s soccer coach Mike Avery has emphasized the importance of building toward a winning week in November. With all six Missouri Valley Conference teams qualifying for the league tournament this year, the team’s focus has been on making strides throughout the year to be playing its best soccer come tournament time. The weeks of preparation are in the books, and the test comes this week in Rogers Park, starting with a first-round tournament date with Drake on Wednesday afternoon at the Loyola Soccer Complex.

The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team put together its best defensive outing of the season in Sunday's regular-season road finale, topping Evansville 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play. A Ryan Madondo (Franklin, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy [East Tennessee State]) goal was the difference as goalkeeper Jorn-Jan van de Beld (Balkbrug, The Netherlands / University of Twente) led Valpo to its first clean sheet of 2019.

Valpo Falls Shy in Near Upset of No. 9 Missouri State
The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team came within five minutes of an unforgettable upset over No. 9 Missouri State at a rainy and wet Brown Field on Wednesday afternoon, but the Bears remained the only perfect team in the nation by scoring a late equalizer and eventually a golden goal to top Valpo 3-2. The Brown & Gold led 2-0 as late as the 72nd minute.

After a challenging stretch of five straight on the road, the Brown & Gold will face a whole new challenge on Wednesday, welcoming No. 9 Missouri State to Northwest Indiana. The week continues on Sunday as Valpo visits instate foe Evansville in the regular season’s penultimate match.

The Brown & Gold will look to secure a road win against a former conference foe. The Panthers are the third Horizon League member Valpo has faced this season.

The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team created several quality chances, but Missouri Valley Conference foe Loyola prevailed 2-0 on Saturday night at Loyola Soccer Park. One Valpo chance hit the right post and another resulted in an outstanding save by the Ramblers keeper, keeping Valpo off the scoreboard on a brisk autumn evening on Chicago’s north side.

A stretch of five consecutive road fixtures for the Valparaiso University men’s soccer team began on Saturday night with a 3-0 setback to SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. Jorn-Jan van de Beld (Balkrug, The Netherlands / University of Twente) received the start at the goalkeeper spot and notched six saves. Valpo played well in spurts and controlled considerable possession on a night where the final score was not fully indicative of what transpired.

Missouri Valley Conference play is upon us as the Valparaiso University men’s soccer team will kick off league action on Wednesday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. against preseason MVC favorite Missouri State. Evansville will provide the opposition for the first Valley home fixture of 2019, a Sunday matinee at Brown Field. The conference is using a new double-round robin format, so Wednesday will kick off a 10-game slate that sees Valpo play each of the other five teams at home and on the road.

The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team debuted its new turf by equaling a program record for goals in a game on Monday night, downing IU Northwest 8-2. It was the team’s first regular season game at Brown Field since the facility received new turf over the summer. Freshman Cole Rainwater (Schererville, Ind. / Lake Central) made his first collegiate home game one to remember, producing a hat trick while finishing the night with seven points.
