Three Valpo Student-Athletes Honored on MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams

Three Valparaiso University men’s soccer players were recognized on Wednesday as the Missouri Valley Conference unveiled its 2019 Scholar-Athlete honorees. Senior Dylan Waugaman (Houston, Texas / Friendswood [Oregon State]) was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team, while sophomore Mattia Dabala (Venice, Italy / Maria Lazzari) and senior Adan Garcia (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal School of Dallas) earned MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention.


Marcey Named to MVC All-Tournament Team

The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team was represented by junior midfielder Mason Marcey (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte, Christian [Radford]) on the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference all-tournament team, which was announced by the league office following the conclusion of the championship match on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer Edged in Overtime in MVC Tournament Quarterfinal

The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team led for much of the match, but saw a quality effort come up shy in a season-closing 2-1 overtime defeat to Drake on a frigid Wednesday afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. The Bulldogs tied the match in the 87th minute on a shot that came from nearly the midfield stripe, then won it on a golden goal in the second overtime. Valpo’s goal was a beauty from Mason Marcey (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Christian [Radford]) in the first half.


Men's Soccer Set for MVC Tournament at Loyola

From the time the season kicked off, Valparaiso University men’s soccer coach Mike Avery has emphasized the importance of building toward a winning week in November. With all six Missouri Valley Conference teams qualifying for the league tournament this year, the team’s focus has been on making strides throughout the year to be playing its best soccer come tournament time. The Valparaiso University men’s soccer team came within five minutes of an unforgettable upset over No. 9 Missouri State at a rainy and wet Brown Field on Wednesday afternoon, but the Bears remained the only perfect team in the nation by scoring a late equalizer and eventually a golden goal to top Valpo 3-2. The Brown & Gold led 2-0 as late as the 72nd minute.
