Valparaiso junior golfers Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) were both named to the all-Horizon League team when the conference announced the season golf awards on Thursday.
Both golfers made the all-league team for the first time in their Crusader careers. Valparaiso was one of two schools to play multiple members on the all-league squad.
“I’m really happy for Kelly and Michelle,” Valparaiso head coach Mat Blair said. “They have both put in the time and effort and deserve their all-league honors.”
Voigt posted a 77.8 stroke average for the year, which was best for the Crusaders. She won medalist honors at both the CSU Cougar Classic (even-par 144) and the Dayton Fall Invitational (3-under 139).
She set school records for both individual round score (68) and two-round total (139).
Kleckner finished with a stroke average of 80.2, which was the second best for the Crusaders. She won medalist honors at the Crusader Spring Invitational, and she also finished fifth at the Dayton Fall Invitational (2-over 144).
“Kelly had a phenomenal fall, while Michelle put together a fantastic spring,” Blair said.
The Crusaders open play at the Horizon League Championship on Friday with the first round at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
“We have as much talent as anyone in the league,” Blair said. “If we can put it together and play consistently for three days, we can win it.”
The winner of the 54-hole tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Championships.
