Schreiner Leads Valpo on Day 1 in State Capital
Katie Schreiner had the best day of her collegiate career on Monday.

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team played the first 36 holes of the two-day, three-round Butler Fall Invitational, which began on Monday at the par-70, 6040-yard Highland Country Club in Indianapolis. The Beacons were led by Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit) on the first day of action in Indy.

How It Happened

  • Schreiner had the best day of her collegiate career, outdoing her previous career low of 77 in each round on Monday. She stroked a 75 in Round 1 before trimming two more strokes off that personal best in Round 2 with a 73. She finished the day at 148. Her 73 in Round 2 tied for eighth in program history in 18-hole round low.
  • After entering the tournament as the team’s stroke average leader this season, Anna Fay (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills) was second on the squad on Monday. She had a strong opening-round score with a 76 but needed 83 strokes in the afternoon round to finish the day at 159.
  • The next two Beacons in terms of 36-hole score were Madison Keil (LaGrange, Ind. / Lakeland) and Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City). Both golfers finished the day at 160 by following their 81 in Round 1 with a 79 in Round 2.  
  • As a team, Valpo finished the day in 14th of 16 at 627, ahead of both Southern Indiana (631) and Eastern Illinois (638). The Beacons golfed a 313 in Round 1 and a 314 in Round 2.
