Women’s Golf Opens Up Spring Slate
Taylor Skibinski tied for the team's top score on Monday.

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team opened the spring season on Monday by golfing the first two rounds of the Islander Classic, hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the par-72, 6112-yard Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi, Texas. Anna Fay (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills) and Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) tied for the team’s top spot on the first day of competition.

How It Happened

  • Fay made a drastic improvement from Round 1 to Round 2, trimming seven strokes off her opening round score to finish the first day of action at 167 (87-80), tied for 38th in a 63-player, 11-team field.
  • Skibinski also took a step forward from the opening round to the second, carding an 85 over the first 18 holes before finishing the afternoon session with an 82. She was part of the tie for 38th with Fay at 167 for the day.
  • Just a stroke behind her teammates was Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit), whose 168 checked in at t-41. She posted identical scores of 84 in each round.
  • Valpo posted a team score of 669 (337-332), outdoing Prairie View A&M (683) on the team leaderboard. The Beacons are only three strokes out of ninth and five strokes out of eighth with 18 holes to play.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“It’s great to get started outside on grass again. We struggled finding consistency after not hitting on grass for four months. Attitudes are great and I’m very proud of that. The thought for tomorrow is to keep working toward consistency and make improvements heading toward April.”
