Game Recap: Soccer |

Soccer Falls at Belmont Thursday Evening

The Valpo soccer team went into halftime of its MVC match at Belmont Thursday evening level, but the Bruins struck in the second half to send the Beacons to a 4-0 defeat.

How It Happened
  • It was a feeling-out process at the beginning of the match, with both sides pushing forward to get chances. Valpo had a trio of shot attempts from minute 11 to minute 17, but none of them found the mark.
  • A low dive to her right in the 27th minute was among the four first-half saves made by freshman goalkeeper Hailey Wade (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) as the match went into intermission scoreless.
  • Coming out of halftime, Wade made a pair of strong stops early in the second half to keep the Bruins off the board before Carly Ross found the back of the net in the 49th minute.
  • Following the Bruins' opening goal, Valpo got deep in search for the equalizer, earning corner kicks in the 52nd and 53rd minutes.
  • Eliza Paisley made it 2-0 Belmont in the 60th minute, and the Bruins closed the scoring with goals from Kaitlyn Elliott and Ava Labocki.

Inside the Match
  • Wade matched her season high with 11 saves in goal.
  • As a team, Valpo combined for 15 saves, as redshirt sophomore Kate Sheridan (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) played the last 17 minutes and made one stop, while the Beacons were credited with three team defensive saves as well.
  • Valpo deployed 21 field players in addition to the two keepers over the course of the match.

Thoughts From Coach Marovich
"I felt like we came out and had a very nice first half. We created a few dangerous chances with dynamic movements up front — pushed a couple past the post, couldn't connect on a cross on one. Those buildups and ways to progress were quite good."

"When you're building against a 3-5-2 against low fullbacks, we discussed what we needed to do in terms of building out of the back in that situation. Unfortunately, we made some tough decisions in those moments and got punished for it, and after that, the circumstance got the better of us tonight.

"Nobody's comfortable with tonight's result in terms of what it means, but I feel like our environment is stronger than that, so we're going to look ahead and fight to get three points on Sunday."
