Women's Swimming

Swimming Opens Home Slate Saturday

The Valpo women's and men's swimming teams hosted the first of four home meets at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center Saturday, welcoming Saginaw Valley State to town for a dual meet. The Beacons earned seven combined event wins against an SVSU program which has both of its teams ranked among the top-20 in Division II.

How It Happened
  • The Valpo women earned five individual event wins, led by Roxanne Adams (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Homeschooled), who swept the breaststroke events. Adams touched the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.57 before taking top honors in the 200 breast with a time of 2:29.66.
  • Adams' win in the 100 breast came as part of a stretch which saw the Beacon women win four consecutive events. Sophie Schoch (Medina, Ohio/Medina) posted a time of 1:00.92 in the 100 back to win that race, Kailyn Benoit (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) took the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.00 and Una Dizdarevic (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) sprinted to a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.73.
  • Racing the 1650 free for the first time this season, Ally Unruh (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) improved upon her second-best time in program history as she covered the distance in 17:46.88. Unruh also led the Beacons and finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:13.85.
  • Schoch added a second-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.73 to her 100 back win, while Benoit also paced the Beacons in the 100 fly.
  • Audrey Morgan (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) led the Valpo contingent with a time of 1:55.46 in the 200 free, good for second place, and also paced the Beacons in the 100 free. Olivia Tressler (Las Vegas, Nev./Desert Oasis) also had a second-place finish in the 200 IM, leading Valpo as she came home in 2:17.53.
  • The women closed the meet on a high note, as the 200 free relay quartet of Dizdarevic, Bri Keese (Brighton, Colo./Brighton), Faith Bargwell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Rockford) and Morgan took top honors with a time of 1:38.92.
  • On the men's side, freshman Caleb Smesko (Green, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) earned Valpo's lone event win as he touched the wall first in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.41. The freshman also led the Beacons, coming in second place with a time of 52.40 in the 100 back.
  • Two other Valpo men led the team in a pair of events. Gabriel Corkran (Avondale Estates, Ga./Druid Hills) posted second-place finishes in both the 200 fly (1:54.31), moving into seventh place in program history in that event, and the 500 free (4:39.78), while Isaac Dinari (Houston, Texas/Memorial) paced the Beacons in the sprints, posting times of 21.82 in the 50 free and 47.80 in the 100 free.
  • A season which has been full of record book entries so far featured another beyond Corkran's on the men's side Saturday, as Logan Walliker (Washington, Ill./Washington) covered the 1650 free in a team-best 16:49.72, 10th-fastest in program history.
  • Carson Parker (Silver Lake, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) led Valpo with a second-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.02, while Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) came home second in the 200 IM with a team-best time of 1:57.37.
  • Evan Curran (Golden, Colo./Golden) paced Valpo in the 200 free, while Eli Liebmann (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) led the Beacons in the 200 breast.
  • The Valpo women dropped their dual meet to SVSU, 150-112, while the men fell by a 187-75 final.
