The Valpo men's swimming team posted three more program-record swims on Friday as the Beacons competed on day three at the MVC Championships in Oxford, Ohio.
How It Happened
- It took just one event in the Friday morning prelims for the Beacons to register their first school record of the day, as Luke Snider (Germantown, Tenn./Memphis University School) flew home in 49.79 in the 100 fly to set a new mark. Snider became the first swimmer in program history to crack the 50-second barrier, as he shaved 29-hundredths of a second off the previous mark, and erased over a full second from his PR in the event.
- Garrett Hoppman (Midland, Texas/Midland) had a strong prelim swim in the 100 fly as well, posting a time of 51.25 — improving his PR by 12-hundredths of a second which ranks seventh in program history.
- Valpo's second program record of the day came in the second prelim event, as Andrew Berzai (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) covered the 400 IM in 4:00.42 to qualify for the 'B' final. Berzai's time cut 36-hundredths of a second off his own school record in the event, which he had set three years prior as a freshman at the 2022 MAC Championships.
- Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) qualified for the 'B' final in the 400 IM as well and turned the tables on his teammate Friday evening, touching the wall in 4:00.23 to claim the record from Berzai by 19-hundredths of a second. Oostman placed 11th in the event, while Berzai was right behind him in 12th with a time of 4:01.35 in the final.
- Nate Bolinger (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) moved up to sixth in program history in the 200 free with a prelim time of 1:42.19, cutting 1.77 seconds off his PR. Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) posted a prelim time of 1:42.50 in the same event, while Tristan Haver (League City, Texas/Lutheran South Academy) now ranks ninth in program history in the event as he recorded a prelim time of 1:43.51.
- Carson Parker (Silver Lake, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) led the Valpo contingent in the 100 breast with a prelim time of 57.05, fifth-fastest in program history, and also improved upon his 50 breast time with an opening leg of 27.03, ninth-fastest all-time at Valpo. Brendan Stangeland (West Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne) lowered his PR in the 100 breast as well and now ranks sixth in program history with a time of 57.34.
- The Beacons' quartet of Parker, Snider, Oostman and Martin closed Friday evening's proceedings with a 1:23.97 200 free relay, fifth-fastest in program history and good for fifth place.
- In Friday's time trials, Bolinger moved into eighth place in program history in the 100 fly with a time of 51.33, while Matthew Mantz (Spokane, Wash./Mead) lowered his PR to 23.91 in the 50 fly, a time which ranks 10th in program history.
- Valpo concluded the day with 113 points, 34 points clear of Evansville in the team standings.
