Silva Continues Winning Streak as Beacons Drop Cliffhanger to Braves

The Valparaiso University tennis team fell in a tight 4-3 battle with Bradley on Sunday morning indoors at The Court of Northwest Indiana in Valpo. Junior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) extended her singles winning streak to four in a match where Valpo captured three of the five singles showdowns. Both teams had only five healthy players, so the two teams used an unusual format with doubles as separate decisions instead of doubles as one decision since only five singles matches and two doubles matches were played.

How It Happened
  • Both doubles matches came down to the wire, with Bradley recording 6-4 victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Silva was the first singles player off the court, dropping only two games while rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Anna Belogliadova at the No. 1 Singles spot.
  • Valpo leveled the team score at 2-2 when Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) became the next player to polish off a singles win, downing Compassion Tsai 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
  • The Braves secured straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the team victory.
  • Sophomore Lillian Kelly (Fullerton, Calif.  / Fullerton Union) continued a solid conference campaign with a straight-set win over Madi Rogers at No. 5 in the final match to finish. She prevailed 6-1 in the opening set before winning a tighter second set on a tiebreak 7-6(3).
Inside the Match
  • Valpo fell to 0-4 in 4-3 matches this season. Three of the team's seven conference setbacks have come by the slimmest of margins despite the team playing shorthanded and defaulting at No. 6 Singles and No. 2 Doubles in every conference match (with the exception of Sunday against Bradley, when both teams were shorthanded).
  • Silva followed up her Saturday win over the reigning MVC Newcomer of the Year with another win at the top singles spot on Sunday. She has won four consecutive matches and put together back-to-back unbeaten weekends of conference action.
  • Silva secured her 19th singles win of the season, moving into a tie for sixth in program history for singles wins in a single season with her impressive 19-6 mark. She joins Christina Seala (2004-05), Whitney Chada (2004-05), Rachel Janssen (2006-07) and Jelena Vujanic (2017-18).
  • Silva now owns 52 career singles wins, moving into a tie for seventh in program history. She drew even with Kate Kollarova (2000-02) and Whitney Chada (2003-07) for seventh all-time.
  • Silva is 6-1 in conference singles play with one match remaining. She is 9-2 in her last 11 matches.
  • Tanner cracked double figures with her 10th win of the season, improving to 3-4 in conference activity.
  • Kelly possesses a 5-2 record in MVC play despite moving up a spot in the lineup from her original position due to injury.
