Silva, Kelly Prevail in Singles on Sunday at UNI

Junior Moira Silva and sophomore Lillian Kelly continued their recent success in singles as the Valparaiso University tennis team closed out the road portion of the season on Sunday at UNI. The Beacons succumbed to the host Panthers 5-2 at Black Hawk Tennis Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
 
How It Happened
  • The Panthers took No. 3 Doubles by default and won both doubles matches that were played.
  • UNI won No. 6 Singles by default and won the first two singles matches to finish at No. 3 and No. 4 to lock up the team victory. The Panthers also prevailed at No. 2.
  • Kelly pulled off a pair of close sets to sweep her No. 5 Singles match over Abbie Peterson 6-4, 7-6(3).
  • At the top singles spot, Silva rolled to a 6-1 win in Set 1 before dropping the second set on a tiebreak 6-7(5). Since the team outcome had been decided, the match used ta third set breaker, which Silva won going away 10-3.
Inside the Match
  • Silva garnered her 17th singles win of the season, one away from entering the program's single-season top 10.
  • Silva reached the 50-win milestone in singles play for her collegiate career. She moved into a tie for ninth in program history, joining Amanda Tabanera (2019-2023).
  • Silva has won seven of her last nine singles matches and is 4-1 in league play.
  • Kelly picked up her fifth win in the last seven matches and her fourth win since moving up a spot in the lineup to No. 5. She bettered her league record to 4-1 as well.
