The Valparaiso University tennis team extended its unbeaten start to the season, defeating host Purdue Northwest 6-1 and Illinois-Springfield 7-0 on Saturday at the Purdue Northwest Invitational, held at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind.

How It Happened – Purdue Northwest
- The Beacons started the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) and Madi Rogers (Clearwater, Fla. / Florida Virtual [Bradley]) were the first off the court with a 6-2 win over Lintz/Andriantefihasina at No. 1, then Alexandra Popa (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) finished off a 6-2 win over Bortolaso/Watine at No. 3. The closest doubles match came at No. 2, where Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) and Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) emerged victorious, 6-4 over Lopez/Coello.
- Steven was the first singles player to finish, capturing all six games in the opening set on her way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Lintz at No. 3.
- Tanner played at No. 2 Singles and cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lopez, while Silva dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andriantefihasina at the top spot.
- At the bottom of the lineup, Delgado topped Bortolaso 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, while Rogers got the best of Watine 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
- The Pride picked up their lone victory at No. 4 Singles on a tight third-set tiebreak.
How It Happened – Illinois SpringfieldÂ
- The first doubles tandem to finish was Popa and Delgado, who dropped just one game in a 6-1 blitzing of Carter/Garcia at No. 3.
- The Beacons locked up the doubles point when Silva and Rogers finalized a 6-3 victory over Bordean/Grogan at No. 1, then Steven and Tanner polished off a perfect doubles performance with a 6-4 win over Deogaonkar/Mendoza.
- The first singles match in the books was at No. 1, where Silva was one game away from a double bagel in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Bordean.
- Delgado was next off the court, and she did earn a double bagel, taking all 12 games from Carter at No. 5.
- Rogers had one of four perfect sets by the Beacons in the match, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Garcia at No. 6.
- The No. 4 match saw Popa prevail 6-3, 6-1 over Deogaonkar, while Tanner topped Mendoza at No. 2 6-4, 6-2. The closest set was the opener of Steven/Grogan at No. 3, with Steven prevailing on a tiebreak and going on to take the match 7-6(7), 6-1.
