Tennis Extends Winning Streak to Five with Victory Over Chicago State

The Valparaiso University tennis team stretched its winning streak to five on Saturday afternoon, resuming action after spring break by going on the road to beat Chicago State 5-2 at H-F Racquet Club in Chicago. The bottom of the lineup came through in both singles and doubles as Valpo won the second and third doubles matches and the No. 3 through No. 6 singles matches in the nonconference finale.

How It Happened
  • The Beacons won the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Senior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) and sophomore Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) blanked Sanchez/Liyanage 6-0 at No. 2 Doubles. At No. 3, sophomore Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) and senior Madi Rogers (Clearwater, Fla. / Florida Virtual [Bradley]) dropped just one game in a 6-1 victory over Hughes/Morrille.
  • The Cougars took the No. 1 Doubles match on a tiebreak 7-6(5), but the doubles point already belonged to the Beacons.
  • Junior Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) dispatched Morille while dropping only one game at No. 6, winning the match 6-0, 6-1.
  • The No. 5 Singles match was second to finish, extending Valpo's lead in the team match to 3-0 when Delgado prevailed 6-1, 6-3 over Hughes.
  • The Beacons clinched the team win thanks to sophomore Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School), who finished off a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of King at No. 3. Valpo built the lead to 5-0 when Steven finalized her 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Liyanage at No. 4.
  • Chicago State won two close sets at No. 2 Singles and won the top singles match, which Valpo was leading 6-3, 6-5 prior to a retirement due to injury.
Inside the Match
  • This is Valpo's longest winning streak since also recording five straight wins in 2023.
  • With 10 wins on the season, the Beacons are already one win away from tying for the program's highest total since 2007.
  • Silva secured her 54th career doubles win, tied for the fourth most in program history. She moved into a tie with Whitney Chada (2003-2007) with her win on Saturday.
  • Delgado's singles win extended her winning streak to seven and she improved to 11-1 in dual matches and 13-4 overall this season. She moved into a tie for the team lead in singles wins with her triumph on Saturday.
