Game Recap: Softball |

Beacons Drop MVC-Opening Twinbill at SIU

The success at the plate for the Valpo softball team which had carried the Beacons through the early portion of the season was stymied Friday by Southern Illinois, as Valpo was limited to just three hits over a doubleheader sweep by the Salukis, 12-0 and 4-0.

How It Happened – Game One
  • Valpo had its best scoring chance in the opener in the top of the first, as Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron) dumped a single into shallow left with one out and Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]) drew a four-pitch walk two batters later before a pop-out ended the frame.
  • SIU got the only runs it would need with a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the first, plating three runs.
  • The Salukis added five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth for the final margin.

How It Happened – Game Two
  • Valpo got a runner into scoring position in each of the first three innings, but was unable to convert those runners into runs.
  • Meanwhile, Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) was going to work in the circle. After allowing a leadoff single in the first, McDermott struck out three in a row and then struck out the side in the second for six straight punchouts.
  • McDermott escaped the bottom of the third after an error had put two runners in scoring position with one out, inducing a pop-up before recording another strikeout to keep it a scoreless game.
  • A bases-clearing double gave SIU the lead in the bottom of the fourth, and the Salukis added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth for the final score.

Inside the Games
  • Jackson had a hit in each game, while Kim Rodas (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) picked up a base knock in the nightcap.
  • Gallagher drew a walk in both games, extending her on-base streak to open the season to 19 consecutive games.
  • Caitlyn Quickle (Leesburg, Ohio/Fairfield Local) started in the circle and took the loss in game one, falling to 1-2 on the year.
  • McDermott took the loss in game two despite striking out eight in four innings of work, pushing her season record to 7-3.
