Beacons Blanked in Series Finale

The host Drake Bulldogs held the Valpo softball team's bats in check in the series finale between the two teams Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa, as the Beacons were held to just three hits in a 3-0 defeat.

How It Happened
  • Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron) singled with one out in the top of the first and advanced to second on a groundout, but ended up being stranded there.
  • That proved to be Valpo's lone runner in scoring position of the day. The Beacons got a runner on base in the second, third and fifth innings, but none of them were able to advance past first base.
  • Drake got the only run it would need on a two-out unearned tally in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs added a two-run single with two outs in the second for the final margin.
  • Some nice defensive work from the Beacons in the middle innings kept the deficit at three runs. With a runner on first and one out in the fourth, Madison Vrastil (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) snagged a sacrifice attempt just before it hit the ground and threw to first to double off the runner.
  • Then, the fifth inning featured diving catches by Kyndal Shively (Bloomington, Ill./University) in left field going back to the warning track and by Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]) laying out to her right on a line drive at first base.

Inside the Game
  • Valpo won the opening game of a three-game MVC series before dropping the final two games for the fourth time this season.
  • The Beacons were held to just three hits, as Vrastil and Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]) joined Jackson in getting base knocks.
  • Lopez took the loss in the circle, falling to 6-7 this year as she threw the first two innings. Behind her, Kayla Purdy (Matthews, N.C./Porter Ridge) threw two shutout innings, and Caitlyn Quickle (Leesburg, Ohio/Fairfield Local) and Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) had a scoreless inning apiece.
