The Valparaiso University tennis team garnered Missouri Valley Conference accolades for the final week of the season as the No. 1 doubles team of sophomore
Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) and freshman
Alexandra Popa (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) was recognized as the league's Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday.
Â
Tanner and Popa went 2-0 at the top spot this week, helping Valpo to a 2-0 team week with victories over Drake and UNI. They topped Drake's Dodik/Dookie 6-4 on Saturday, helping Valpo to a 4-3 victory for the first win over the Bulldogs in program history. Tanner and Popa teamed up for a dramatic 7-6(4) victory over UNI's top tandem of Raznatovic/Schuknecht on Sunday in the team's 6-1 victory over the Panthers, helping Valpo clinch its highest overall win total since 2006.
Â
Tanner also had a glowing week at No. 3 Singles, going 2-0 including a dramatic comeback from down a set and 0-5 in the second set to storm back and win the decisive match in the team's 4-3 victory over Drake.
Â
Tanner and Popa both achieved their first-career MVC weekly award. This marks the fourth time this year that Valpo has boasted the league's Doubles Team of the Week, and the Beacons finished with eight total MVC weekly awards this season. This marked the 31
st and final Missouri Valley Conference weekly award earned by Valpo tennis during head coach
Bob Modesto's seven seasons leading the program. Â
