Silva, Delgado Win Singles Matches vs. UIC

A pair of Valparaiso University tennis players extended their strong seasons of singles competition on Friday morning as senior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) and sophomore Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) both picked up wins in a 5-2 defeat to UIC at The Courts of Northwest Indiana.

How It Happened
  • The Flames took the doubles point by winning on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, both by the competitive score of 6-4. Valpo's No. 3 tandem of senior Madi Rogers (Clearwater, Fla. / Florida Virtual [Bradley]) and Delgado earned a 6-3 win over Halbertsztadt and Rodriguez Gregoris.
  • In singles play, the first three matches to finish all went the way of the Flames, allowing the guests to clinch the team match by virtue of victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. The first set at second singles was decided on a close tiebreak.
  • Delgado cruised to a straight-set win over Deletioglu in her match, prevailing 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
  • The No. 1 and No. 6 Singles matches both split sets. The sixth singles match went to a traditional tiebreak with junior Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) dropping a nail-biter with a set score of 6-4 in the third.
  • On the top singles court, Silva engaged in a tightly-played match with Edit Cosmo. She bounced back from a narrow 5-7 loss in the first to win the next set on a tiebreak, 7-6(3). Since the team match was decided by the time the second set reached the finish line, they used a 10-point breaker to resolve the match, and Silva won 10-8.
Inside the Match
  • Silva improved to 15-4 on the season including 13-2 in dual matches.
  • Delgado upped her record to 15-5 on the year including 13-2 in dual play. She holds a 9-1 mark in her last 10 singles matches.
  • Silva picked up her 63rd career singles win, moving into sole possession of third in program history. She is two wins away from achieving a tie for second.
  • Silva's win came over Cosmo, who was last year's Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.
  • The match came against a Flames team that went to the NCAA Tournament last season and holds a 10-1 record in league play combining this season and last season.
