Valparaiso University tennis senior
Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Â
Silva won her only match of the week at No. 1 Singles, edging UIC's Edit Cosmo in a tightly-played match on Friday at The Courts of Northwest Indiana. She bounced back from a narrow 5-7 loss in the first to win the next set on a tiebreak, 7-6(3). Since the team match was already decided by the time the second set reached its completion, they used a 10-point tiebreak to resolve the match, and Silva won 10-8.
Â
Silva improved to 15-4 on the season including 13-2 in dual matches. Her win came over Cosmo, last year's Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. Silva picked up her 63rd career singles win, moving into sole possession of third in program history.
Â
Silva now owns 15 career MVC weekly awards including seven this season. She has been named the league's Singles Player of the Week four times this year and eight times in her collegiate career, the most of any Valpo player since the department joined the Missouri Valley Conference.
Â
Valley play continues this week for the Beacons, who hit the road to play at Murray State on Saturday and Belmont on Sunday.
