Christopher Smith

Christopher Smith joined the Valparaiso University staff in April 2020 as the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports,  was promoted to Director of Campus Recreation & Well-Being in October 2023 and now serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Campus Recreation and Well-Being. Joining the staff allowed him to return to his alma mater, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in December 2012 and a master’s in sports administration in May 2015.

In Smith’s role, he develops the overall vision and mission for the programs and services offered by the Campus Recreation and Well-Being department. He serves as the building administrator of the Fitness Center, outdoor recreation spaces and the esports arena. He is directly responsible for all aspects of the intramural sports program. 

Prior to accepting his current position at Valpo, Smith served as the Intramural Sports and Outdoor Recreation Manager at Northern Michigan University from 2015-2020. During his time at NMU, he directed the intramural sports program, marketing staff, outdoor recreation center, climbing wall, and Wildcat summer and spring break youth camps. In addition, Smith assisted with the creation of NMU’s varsity esports program.

Prior to his stint at Northern Michigan, Smith was the graduate assistant for recreational sports at Valpo from June 2013 to June 2015. He is heavily involved in NIRSA (National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association), having served as an engagement coordinator since 2013. During his undergraduate days, Smith was a four-year member of the Valpo football program.
