The #19 Valpo bowling team began its annual home tournament on Friday with the first of three days of action at the Valpo Bowling Classic at Stardust Bowl III in Dyer, Ind. The Beacons finished the day in third place in the team standings.
 
How It Happened

• With an odd number of teams in the tournament, Valpo began Friday's action — contested in the five-game baker format — with a bye and posted a 920 score, second-best in that match slot.
• The Beacons' first matchup of the tournament came in the second match slot against Elmhurst, but the Beacons fell to the Blue Jays, 891-861.
• Valpo followed by dropping a 901-838 decision to Carroll and a 986-841 final to #22 UW-Whitewater.
• The Beacons closed the day with a 985-827 victory over UIndy, the best score in that match slot of any of the tournament's seven teams.
• Valpo finished the day in third place in the team standings with a pinfall of 4,445 pins. #16 Maryland Eastern Shore tops the standings with 4,616 pins.
