Four marks which cracked the program's top-10 charts and nine event victories highlighted the day for the Valpo men's and women's swimming teams Saturday afternoon as the Beacons competed in a dual meet at Green Bay.
 
How It Happened

• Freshman Ally Unruh (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) took top honors in both distance events. Her time of 10:35.80 in the 1000 free catapulted her into third place in program history in the event, while later in the meet, she won the 500 free with a time of 5:12.65.
• Senior Sara Strauss (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) improved upon her fourth-best time in program history in the 200 breast with her winning time of 2:25.11.
• The women kicked off the meet with the fifth-fastest 400 medley relay all-time at Valpo, as sophomore Sophie Schoch (Medina, Ohio/Medina), Strauss, sophomore Kailyn Benoit (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) and senior Courtney Ledbetter (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) covered the distance in 3:59.26.
• On the men's side, junior Matthew Mantz (Spokane, Wash./Mead) lowered his PR in the 1000 free with a time of 10:02.24, improving his ninth-fastest time in program history. Mantz finished second in both that event and the 200 fly (1:56.34).
• Joining Unruh and Strauss as an individual event winner on Saturday on the women's side was Benoit, as the sophomore covered the 200 fly in 2:11.16.
• Ledbetter posted team-best swims of 24.74 in the 50 free and 54.16 in the 100 free, both good for runner-up showings.
• The men recorded a pair of 1-2 finishes. Junior Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) took first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.25, with junior Tim Mai (St. Johns, Fla./Creekside) coming in right behind him. Mai went on to an event win in the 500 free later in the afternoon, touching the wall in 4:53.67.
• The Beacons' other 1-2 showing came in the 100 free. Freshman Will Schenk (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall) took top honors with a time of 47.67, while junior Luke Snider (Germantown, Tenn./Memphis University School) followed up with a time of 47.88.
• The Beacons capped the day on a high note, sweeping the 800 free relays. The women's quartet of junior Emma Schmidt (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley), Unruh, junior Caroline Gorski (Melrose Park, Ill./Leyden) and Schoch raced to first place with a time of 7:59.77, while the men's squad of Martin, sophomore Nate Bolinger (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield), freshman Tristan Haver (League City, Texas/Lutheran South Academy) and Schenk covered the distance in 7:02.25.
• It was a competitive meet in terms of the dual meet scoring, as Green Bay won on the men's side, 116-89, and on the women's side, 114-91.

 
Next Up
It will be a fourth straight weekend with intercollegiate competition for the Beacons next weekend, as Valpo hosts Butler and Lewis at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
