The Valpo soccer team looked poised to claim all three points from its MVC matchup against Drake Sunday afternoon at Brown Field, carrying a 1-0 lead into the final 10 minutes, but the visiting Bulldogs flipped the script late, scoring in the 85th and 87th minutes to send the Beacons to a 2-1 loss.
How It Happened
- The Beacons opened the scoring just over 10 minutes out from halftime on an unusual play. Senior Addy Joiner (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) whipped a corner kick into the box, where it deflected off a Drake defender and the continued momentum sent it into the back of the net to put Valpo ahead, 1-0.
- Valpo held that 1-0 lead into halftime and throughout most of the second half, fending off pressure from the Bulldogs for much of the final 45.
- In the 85th minute, Drake broke through, as Angela Gutierrez headed home a cross from Layla Keibel.
- The Bulldogs weren't done, as in the 87th minute, Keibel took a shot which deflected off a Valpo defender and across the goal line to put Drake on top with less than four minutes remaining.
- The Beacons had just one shot attempt the remainder of the match as they were unable to find an equalizer.
Inside the Match
- Drake outshot Valpo 13-7 and put seven of its efforts on frame versus four for the Beacons.
- Goalkeeper Hailey Wade (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) made five saves in goal for Valpo.
- Joiner's goal was her fifth of the year and the 23rd of her career. She now owns 52 career points, tied with Emily King and Kendall Brown for fourth-most in program history.
Thoughts From Coach Marovich
"What we have to take away from how today played out is the importance of details and the importance of playing a full 90."
"We tried to see the game out — we went to five in the back to kill the game the final 15 minutes, and it didn't work out for us today, we ended up paying the soccer price. We're certainly not the first team this has happened to, it happens to teams at the highest levels. As a coach, I'm looking back at my decision in that space as well and asking myself if that was the best decision for us."
"Today's result happened, and now the question is, how do we respond? We have to very quickly get back to the work of going out and accumulating as many points as we can."
