Another early-season meet and another program record has fallen by the wayside, as Valpo swimming freshman
Gabriel Corkran (Avondale Estates, Ga./Druid Hills) surpassed the previous standard in the 500 free in Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. A four-team meet hosted by IU Indy scored as three dual meets, the Valpo women picked up victories over Evansville and Southern Indiana, while the men made it a clean sweep of the Screaming Eagles.

How It Happened
- Corkran moved atop the program's all-time chart in the 500 free in his third collegiate meet, touching the wall in 4:37.62 to edge the previous record by .06. The freshman, who finished in second in that event, also moved into eighth in program history in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.20 and paced Valpo as well in the 100 free with a time of 46.95.
- On the women's side, the Beacons had three individual event wins and a relay victory to secure a pair of meet wins. Sophomore Ally Unruh (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) kicked off the winning swims by taking top honors in the 1000 free with a time of 10:38.72, and later moved up into eighth place in program history with her time of 4:44.53 in the 400 IM.
- Freshman Audrey Morgan (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) came home in 1:53.65 in the 200 free to earn the event victory, placed second in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.98 – fifth-fastest in program history — and moved into seventh in program history in the 50 free with a time of 24.39.
- Junior Sophie Schoch (Medina, Ohio/Medina) took first place in the 100 back with a time of 58.89, improving upon her fifth-best time in program history. Schoch also paced Valpo in the 200 back with a second-place showing, covering the distance in 2:06.78.
- The Valpo women closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, moving into fourth in program history with a time of 3:33.37 thanks to the quartet of freshman Una Dizdarevic (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park), senior Caroline Gorski (Melrose Park, Ill./Leyden), Schoch and Morgan.
- While she didn't pick up an event win, Dizdarevic had a pair of the best times in program history in her individual events. The freshman came home as the runner-up in both the 50 free (24.22, improving upon her fourth-best time in program history) and the 100 free (52.74, second-fastest in program history).
- Junior Maria Jose Suarez de la Fuente (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM Preparatoria Tec Campus Santa Fe [Bethel]) now ranks ninth in program history in the 400 IM after completing the race Saturday in 4:44.76.
- Sophomore Sam Smith (Manhattan, Ill./Rosary) paced Valpo in both the 200 fly (2:17.78) and the 100 fly (1:02.42), while senior Natalie Eaton (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) led the way for the Beacons with a time of 1:07.62 in the 100 breast and junior Roxanne Adams (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Homeschooled) was the first Valpo swimmer to touch the wall in the 200 breast with a time of 2:27.82.
- Valpo's first relay of the day also cracked the program's record book, as the 400 medley relay team of Schoch, Eaton, junior Kailyn Benoit (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) and Dizdarevic moved into eighth in program history with a time of 4:00.06.
- The women earned a 186-94 win over Evansville and a 153-140 win over Southern Indiana, while falling 185-108 to IU Indy.
- On the men's side, beyond Corkran's record-setting swim in the 500 free, the Beacons had two other individuals and both relays move into the record books Saturday.
- Senior Matthew Mantz (Spokane, Wash./Mead) moved up to sixth all-time in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:58.53, while freshman Caleb Smesko (Green, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) won the 200 back with a time of 1:51.60, good for third in program history. Smesko also paced the Beacons in the 100 back with a time of 50.53.
- Both of Valpo's relays moved into eighth place in program history in the respective events — the 400 medley relay quartet of Smesko, sophomore Carson Parker (Silver Lake, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley), senior Timothy Mai (St. Johns, Fla./Creekside) and freshman Evan Curran (Golden, Colo./Golden) stopped in the clock in 3:25.78, while the 400 free relay team of Curran, freshman Isaac Dinari (Houston, Texas/Memorial), Corkran and senior Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) came home in 3:07.79.
- Individually, Parker earned a second-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 57.34, while also pacing the Beacons in the 200 breast with a time of 2:09.62.
