Valpo Athletics Reveals Hall of Fame Class of 2026; All-Sports Reunion Weekend Set for Jan. 16-18

Four individuals and a set of three teams make up the Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2026, set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame Jan. 17 as part of the annual All-Sports Reunion Weekend. The 28th class in Hall of Fame history includes the 2003, 2004 and 2005 volleyball teams, Ryan Broekhoff, Calvin Luther, Shayne Snider and Kyle Zobeck.

The 2003, 2004 and 2005 volleyball teams put together one of the most dominating three-year stretches by any program in Valpo Athletics history. The teams combined for an 83-21 overall record over those three seasons, recording the three winningest seasons in program history — including a program-record 29 wins in 2004. They went 40-2 in Mid-Continent Conference regular season action, earning three Mid-Con regular season titles, three Mid-Con Tournament titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Over those three years, Valpo boasted 13 All-Mid-Con honorees, including one Mid-Con Player of the Year, two Defensive Players of the Year and three Setters of the Year, while Carin Avery was twice named Mid-Con Coach of the Year.

Broekhoff was a standout on the basketball court for Valpo from 2009 through 2013. He was named Horizon League Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention AP All-American as he helped lead Valpo to its first Horizon League regular season title in 2011-12. Broekhoff was a repeat First Team All-Horizon League honoree as a senior as he helped the program to a then-school record 26 wins, Horizon League regular season and tournament titles — the latter featuring his buzzer-beater in the semifinal win over Green Bay — and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Fourth in program history in career rebounds and eighth in scoring, Broekhoff went on to play two seasons in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and also played in Russia, Turkey and Australia over a 10-year pro career. He represented his native Australia in numerous international competitions, highlighted by appearances at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

A basketball player during his time on campus, Luther went on to a long and distinguished career as a collegiate basketball head coach. He got his start as a head coach at DePauw, where he spent four seasons. His next stop was Murray State, where he won 241 games over 16 seasons, including three OVC regular season titles, and also spent 11 years as director of athletics. He went on to coach nine years at Longwood and nine seasons at UT Martin before closing his coaching career with one year at Bethel (Tenn.). A four-time conference Coach of the Year, Luther is a member of the Murray State Hall of Fame, the UT Martin Hall of Fame and the OVC Hall of Fame.

Snider was a menace for opposing quarterbacks as he patrolled the defensive backfield for the football program from 1992 through 1994. A two-time Honorable Mention All-American selection and a preseason All-American entering his senior season, Snider ranked third nationally and led the PFL with eight interceptions in each of his final two seasons. He ranks among Valpo's all-time leaders with 18 career picks and amassed 16 interceptions in two years playing in the PFL, fifth in league history. He was a First Team All-PFL selection as a junior in 1993 and a Second Team choice as a senior in 1994, when he helped Valpo to a 7-3 record — the program's best record in 23 years. Snider was invited to the NFL Combine following his senior year, becoming Valpo's first combine invitee in 18 years.

Zobeck was a brick wall in goal for the men's soccer program from 2008 through 2012. A two-time Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and two-time First Team All-League honoree, Zobeck earned NSCAA Third Team All-Region and Third Team Scholar All-American accolades as a junior in 2011, setting program single-season records for shutouts (11) and goals against average (0.66) to help lead Valpo to the Horizon League regular season title. He holds Valpo's career record with 23 shutouts and ranks second in program history with a 0.92 GAA, marks which rank seventh and ninth, respectively, in Horizon League history. Zobeck was selected in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas and spent one year with them before playing four seasons with the New York Cosmos of the NASL. He returned to FC Dallas prior to the 2018 season and spent four seasons under contract with them, making his MLS debut in 2020. While on loan to USL League One side North Texas SC in 2019, Zobeck helped that side win a league title.

The All-Sports Reunion Weekend presents a unique opportunity for Valpo student-athletes of yesteryear to both rekindle old bonds and forge new connections. This event allows Valpo Athletics to celebrate its proud past while supporting student-athletes of the present. Alumni will use this as an opportunity to show current student-athletes how the memories and friendships that they create while competing for the Brown & Gold will truly last a lifetime. The All-Sports Reunion Weekend gives Valpo a chance to unite the past and present through a shared Valpo experience that transcends generations.

The Hall of Fame induction breakfast — scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Harre Union Ballrooms — is one event in a full lineup of activities for All-Sports Reunion Weekend. The weekend kicks off Friday evening, Jan. 16, as swimming hosts its Senior Meet at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center on 5 p.m. against Bethel. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, Valpo Athletics hosts Welcome Back Brews at The Bell & Beacon, inside the Harre Union.

Following the Hall of Fame breakfast, student-athletes who are in their second year competing at Valpo will receive their letter jackets as part of the Letter Jacket Ceremony at 11 a.m. in the ballrooms. A pregame reception will begin an hour before the men's basketball contest versus UNI, which will tip off at either 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. To access the men's basketball pregame reception, a game ticket is required.

Following the men's basketball game, Ring the Bell! Valpo Athletics will have a staff photographer on site for photos of alumni at the Victory Bell.

The weekend concludes Sunday, Jan. 18 - the tennis team takes on SIUE at the Courts of Northwest Indiana at 10 a.m., and the ARC Suite will be open to alumni for the women's basketball game versus Drake, which will tip off at 1 p.m.
